September 19th Results!
Saturday night at Crystal Motor Speedway was the final event of the
season with the running of the 17th annual Great Lakes Nationals.
Approximately 188 cars and a full grandstand of fans were on hand to
watch spectacular racing that is expected at this event. The race was
sponsored by Victor Reinz Gaskets, Engine Pro, and Mellings Engine
Parts.
The first feature was the Port City Pro Stock division. Mike Husted
got out front early and looked smooth. Ryan Kent, Chris Rinard, Jimmy
Hale Jr, and Chaney Newland all were tight to his bumper, but unable
to get around the leader. Hale fell back but then mounted another
charge forward and was able to thread his way to the front to take
home the win over Rinard, Newland, Vern Buskirk, Josh Frye, Kent, Nate
Jones, Jeff Gibson, Renton Hurley, and Keith Gentz. Brent Hollenbeck
won the B Main with heats falling to Newland, Kent, and Rinard.
The Michigan Traditional Sprints were up next as they ended their
season and the championship was at stake. After a pretty bad looking
wreck in the first lap of the feature that brought a red for about 20
minutes, Joe Bares worked his way to the lead and then took off to
beat back Mike Galajda to take the win. Steve Irwin pocketed the
season championship and came home in fifth tonight after an
outstanding season run.
Jeff Loomis took the early lead in the Smokers Club of Mt Pleasant
Street Stocks but Will Stanley began to challenge with Robb Sternberg
soon joining the fray to make it three wide for the lead but Loomis
was able to hold everyone back. Stanley suffered a flat tire that took
him out of the race after a good run and season. Loomis and Sternberg
battled all race long, as they had to dice through heavy lapped
traffic as they fought for the lead. A caution tightened the field
right at the half way point with Sternberg out front on the restart.
After a great fight Robb Sternberg held on to win with Ralph Sternberg
grabbing second, followed by Dan Hersey, Kevin Rohn, Kyle Prochazka,
Joseph Pomeroy, James Billett, Bobby Lynn, Loomis, and, Randy
Radabaugh. Ryan Lewis scored the B Main win with heat gold going to
Loomis, Rohn, and Robb Sternberg.
Tim Sooy jumped out front of the Port City Pro Trucks for a couple of
laps but it didn't take too long and Chris Verhaar to over take him.
Sooy caught the wall, bringing out the caution and bunching the field.
With about five to go, Kevin Deal began to challenge Verhaar but had
to fall back when he suffered a flat tire. Ian Knodertzek came up late
to challenge but Verhaar held on to win over Knodertzek, Ashlee Scott,
Scott Nieman, Brent Neverth, Dave Peters, Jason Parkhurst, Joe Nieman,
Eugene Decker, and Gordon Snyder. Verhaar and Knodertzek took home
heat wins.
Richard Melton grabbed the lead in the Races On The Web Flinn Stock
event with Rob Nieman and Charles Petersen second and third. Melton
and Petersen began to move through heavy traffic as Nieman fell back
with a soft tire. Melton got behind lapped traffic and Petersen
grabbed the lead, only to lose it half a lap later in traffic. A car
in the wall bunched the field with just two short laps to go. When the
green fell for the last time, Melton jumped out front but scrubbed the
wall as he came in for the white. Petersen took the lead and then the
win with Nieman second and then Melton, Tyler McGhan, Lee Zahm, Austin
Bean, Bob Whitcomb, Randall Stevens, Chase Roberts, and Neil Zeigler.
Bob Whitcomb and Gavin Parks scored heat wins.
The Kentucky Fried Chicken Late Model race was a 40 lap affair and the
early lead went to Carl Ries, Andy Sprague and Jay Van Dyke. Ries
pulled out to a comfortable lead while Van Dyke and Sprague battled
for second. A caution at lap ten bunched the field but Ries jumped
back out front with Sprague and Dona Marcoullier making up the top
three. Marcoullier made it to second and began to slowly move to the
front with Sprague and Van Dyke just behind. Marcoullier gave Ries
everything he could but Ries was able to hold on to take the win over
Marcoullier, Sprague, Van Dyke, Brian Nickerson, Steve Fairbanks,
Scott Baker, Zack Olger, Kyle Borgman, and Scott Haney. Baker and
Dusen won B Main features with Tim Stott, Kevin Nelson Jr, Rich Neiser, and Zach
Olger taking heat wins.
The final event of 2009 was the Engine Pro IMCA Modified feature and
the opening lap was a wild one when Toby Steele did a wild flip and
ended up on his roof. Steele was unhurt but unable to continue. Joe
Fowler grabbed the early lead with Brennan Bowen close behind. Chad
Maurer started to the rear of the field and began his attempt to
secure the track championship. Maurer had to keep Bowen within five
positions to bring home the title as he slowly began his climb
forward. Don Rohn was running toward the front pack but he dropped a
driveshaft, taking him out after a good run. The restart found Fowler
and Josh Borton out front. The caution waved once again as Maurer
slowed and then pulled to the infield with mechanical problems,
leaving the field and the door open for Bowen to win the championship
with Bowen having to stay five positions ahead of Maurer. Myron
DeYoung also had a great run going, moving up to third only to blow an
engine and falling out of the race. Fowler ran a rock solid line for
the remaining laps and held on to win over Borton, Bowen, Greg Wiles,
Brody Bowser, Aaron Raby, Chad Wernette, Rusty Zeigler, Jason Maurer,
and Rich White. Unofficially, Bowen claimed the Engine Pro IMCA
Modified title. Jerry Hunt and Chad Maurer won B main events with
heats going to Cliff Denman, Bowser, Wiles, and J.R. Schmid.
This event ends the 2009 season for Crystal Motor Speedway and the
promoters and employees of the track wish to thank everyone who
supported them through some tough economic times. Full pits and
grandstands were the norm this season and the CMS family thanks
everyone for their support. The 2009/2010 banquet will be held in mid
